TomTom VIA 1405TM 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Reviews and Rating

TomTom VIA 1405TM Portable GPS Navigator received an average rating 3.3 of out of 5 stars from 60 online reviewers who purchased and used the product.

Below are TomTom VIA 1405TM Portable GPS Navigator Pros and Cons as experienced and described by its users.

TomTom VIA 1405TM Portable GPS Navigator Positive Reviews Summary

Majority of the people who bought TomTom VIA 1405TM were impressed by its performance. Some commented that this model is thinner and lighter than the TomTom XL series and has a slightly better screen although the difference is not that obvious.

Diagonal lines are a little less jaggy on the TomTom VIA 1405TM GPS for Car if you look closely but the increased resolution doesn’t make much difference. The font size is slightly different as well. The font for the current street is a little larger on the 1405TM Car GPS System, but the font for the next street to turn onto is slightly smaller, which you can see in the screen image on this site.

Another development is that when you approach your destination, it will tell you if it’s on the right or the left. With previous generation TomToms you could see which side of the street your destination was on by looking at the screen, but it didn’t announce it audibly.

The voice instructions in the TomTom 1405TM are definitely easier to follow. The address entry system is easy to enter the destination. The satellite loads quickly and is very accurate. This is a basic no frills unit and gives excellent directions. It’s not loaded with a lot of gimmicks and gets you where you want to go and does so very well.

TomTom VIA 1405TM Portable GPS Navigator Negative Reviews Summary

The glare from the sun makes the screen hard to read and is an issue unless you can place the device in a darker area. Also, the TomTom website doesn’t yet recognize the different 1400 models, they’re not a selectable option on dropdown list and it doesn’t recognize their software.

The 1405TM GPS for Car does however recognize them as generic 1400 but that will not get you your lifetime map updates. As a matter of fact it tells you that the software version on the device is wrong.

Other flaw of the TomTom VIA Car GPS System is its lack of password protection but it shows you a symbol of a man stealing to remind you to be cautious of it being stolen.

Side by side on a table inside the house, an old TomTom can find the satellites within 40 seconds of it being turned on, but the VIA 1405TM still has no signal after 5 minutes and 45 seconds. This device appears that it was released before the backend was finished.
