Garmin nüvi 255W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator Review

Garmin nüvi 255W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS NavigatorIncluded in the Garmin nüvi 255W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator are the predictive technology that locks satellite faster, terrain maps, a redesigned screen that displays more information and new photo navigation feature.

It has Text-to-Speech, wide 4.3-inch diagonal screen, complete maps for North America and more for your navigation needs in a stylish slim design.

Plan a Trip with Google Maps or Mapquest
While nüvi 255W is hooked up to the computer, you can search the location that you want in Google Maps or Mapquest.

Simply click the ‘Send’ link in the info window for the address that you searched which brings up a pop up ‘Send To’ form. Click GPS, click Garmin, hit the ‘Send’ button and the address is transferred to your nüvi 255W.

Garmin Connect Photos
By using Garmin Connect Photos from Garmin website, you can choose from millions of geo-located photos which are provided by Google Panoramio photo sharing community. These photos are downloadable to nüvi 255W. By using these pictures as a guide, you can enjoy richer navigation.

Text-To-Speech Feature
This device has Text-to-speech feature which automatically calls out specific name of streets. Instead of saying the usual ‘turn right in 200 feet’ alert, it specifically says ‘turn right on Main Street’. This awesome feature allows drivers to have their eyes focused on the road while they are navigating through tricky roadways and heavy traffic.

Wider Display
Garmin’s nüvi 255W has 4.3-inch backlit wide touchscreen which allows you to see more of your surroundings when you hit the road. It displays 70% more screen area than a navigator with only 3.5 inches of screen. The wide screen is beneficial in showing the nearby restaurants, parks, gas stations, ATM machines and the like. It also alerts you when there’s a detour ahead.

HotFix™
For a device to navigate effectively, it needs to get a ‘lock’ on three satellites. With Garmin’s HotFix technology, GPS becomes capable of remembering the position of all satellites it is tracking when it is turned off. Upon turning it on, it easily locates the satellites that it previously tracked.

Traffic-Capable FM Traffic
Touching the screen to view traffic details, TMC Clear Channel (optional receiver) alerts you about traffic tie-ups and road construction that lie ahead. The traffic broadcast is received through silent FM data channel so it doesn’t interfere with music or news programs on car radio.

Screen-Lock
This GPS Navigator has a ‘Screen lock’ feature which prevents the unit from unintentional touches. Sliding the ‘power’ key to the right locks the screen and the screen goes gray/black after 15 seconds. This also helps in saving battery life. Sliding the ‘power’ key to the center unlocks the screen. This feature is beneficial when the user is in pedestrian mode because the unit doesn’t react to accidental touches when it is in the user’s pocket or purse while in motion.

Garmin Lock
This device has theft prevention system. When a non-owner attempts to use it, the screen asks for 4-digit PIN number which was previously programmed by the owner. Pressing the wrong PIN temporarily disables the device from performing its functions.

Designed For Ease
This device is made with a GPS receiver that is highly sensitive for ideal accuracy. It has wide screen for better display and provides ease of operation by controlling the device through its sensitive touchscreen with your fingers. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery is capable of up to 4 hours of power. The SD card slot is great for storing media and additional navigation tools. Aside from navigation tools, Garmin’s nüvi 255W has JPEG picture viewer, measurement converter, calculator, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter and more.

Despite all the great features above, the Garmin nüvi 255W has its downsides as described below:

Users’ Complaints
(These can be isolated cases. Replacement of unit can be done according to warranty policy.)

  • It lost satellite coverage in a major highway and alerts to make a U-turn in a 6-lane highway.
  • It likes to take the roads that ‘aren’t really there’.
  • Nüvi 255W sometimes gives misleading instructions and can take you off a direct highway and off in the wrong direction.
  • The device says that a software update is needed. After updating, the screen says the software is missing. When hooked again to the computer, it says ‘download file is corrupted’.
  • The built-in map seems to be over 2 years old. A fee of $69 will be paid for the map update.
  • It takes about 30 to 45 seconds to boot up.
